JP Aerospace "Away 9" flight, May 2002

Next[Next]

Away 9 was launched from the Black Rock Desert, NV on May 11, 2002

It flew 77 PongSats and video gear to 90K

At peak altitude, the balloon expands to 50' diameter

The balloon bursts flailing like an octopus, wraps around anything
It tangled in the parachute, preventing it from fully inflating

The camcorder got 1 hour of video up and 20 minutes falling down - a wild ride
It survived the impact after falling 18 miles

Away 9 was recovered 20 minutes after touchdown, tying the Oklahoma record

"Away 9" flight was originally planned for before the Oklahoma trip
hence the lower mission number
