Stratofox Crater Assault 4 was a day trip to the Black Rock Desert on
April 26, 2009. The participants were Rich Loring, Ian Kluft KO6YQ,
Steve Rubin AE6CH and Sam Thigpen KL1FE.
Rich is a retired mining geologist.
Ian and Steve are members of Stratofox.
Sam was qualifying for Stratofox membership with his participation
at this event.
There were two points to this trip. It was exploration of Black Rock
and new-member training.
It was also part of the research into
the theory of a possible impact crater at the Black Rock Desert.
See the e-mail summarizing the trip.
The location for exploration at Pahsupp Mountain was chosen because
it's an area near the relatively near center of the theorized crater
which had not been explored by our group before. An apparent fault
line at the east side of Pahsupp Mountain led to speculation that we
could use this area to observe rocks which have been raised from
deeper in the ground than we had so far at the southern Black Rock Range,
an area which is also near the center of the theorized crater but
not yet accessible this time of year.
The crater research is a project kept at arms length from Stratofox
because not everyone in the group is interested in geology. And even
for those interested in geology, not all want to associate with
research for which there are no published papers yet.
Then again, some don't care about that and are happy to help with any
trip to Black Rock.
When there's a trip there, we recruit participants to help watch for
each others' safety. It's a chance for anyone interested to explore.
It's also a chance for new people to use their participation to
qualify for membership.
