Stratofox assisted the
California Near Space Project
with tracking the K6RPT-13 high-altitude balloon on Feb 5, 2011.
This was an attempt to break the Amateur Radio balloon altitude record,
which is currently about 130,000'.
The balloon burst early this time, with a maximum altitude of 107,116'.
Any flight above 100,000' is still an accomplishment.
See the
tracking data display
from the day of the event.
Unfortunately, there turned out to be no recovery this time.
The balloon was lost in the ocean.
The Stratofox chase teams were on a hill overlooking Carmel Bay when
they received the last packet from the payload
reporting its position 1000 feet above the ocean about 10 miles offshore.
Thanks to Ron Meadows K6RPT and the California Near Space Project for
including Stratofox in their event.
The Stratofox chase teams for the K6RPT-13 balloon were:
Bernhard Hailer AE6YN,
Woody Hoburg KB3HTZ,
Bryan Klofas KF6ZEO,
Ian Kluft KO6YQ,
Sean Lynch KG6CVV and
Rafael Skodlar KC6LBJ.
Photos in this collection were contributed by Woody Hoburg and Ian Kluft.
